New Brunswick is building its clean-energy direction around a diversified electricity system rather than one technology. In 2026, the province’s opportunity includes established nuclear and hydro generation, planned wind and solar expansion, stronger interconnections, community-led renewable projects and new electric-vehicle charging infrastructure.

The mix matters. Reliable low-emission power can support households, industrial investment and exports, while renewable additions and modern grid tools can broaden supply. Several initiatives are still targets, proposals or projects under development, so timelines and final capacity should be assessed separately from current generation.

A diversified base already exists

New Brunswick’s electricity system combines nuclear, hydro, wind and thermal generation. The Canada Energy Regulator reports that nuclear was the province’s largest generation source in 2023, accounting for 34%, while hydroelectricity represented 25%. This established low-emission base gives the province a platform for further electrification, although reliability, refurbishment costs and system affordability remain essential considerations.

NB Power’s integrated resource planning process evaluates future demand and the resources needed to serve it. Its project portfolio includes the Mactaquac Life Achievement Project, work related to Belledune, transmission links and new supply options. Integrated planning is important because generation, transmission, storage and demand management must operate as one system.

Wind and solar targets would materially change the mix

Provincial clean-energy materials describe an ambition to add 1,400 MW of wind, 200 MW of grid-scale solar and 300 MW of behind-the-meter solar. If delivered, that would represent a major expansion of variable renewable capacity. Wind resources, distributed solar and storage can complement established baseload, but they also require grid planning, suitable sites, permitting, community participation and commercial agreements.

The opportunity extends beyond energy production. Renewable development can create demand for civil works, electrical equipment, engineering, environmental services, operations, maintenance and digital grid technologies. The durable value will depend on how much capability and supply-chain participation can be developed within New Brunswick.

Nuclear remains central to the province’s energy identity

Point Lepreau gives New Brunswick a position few Canadian provinces hold: operating nuclear expertise. The province has identified small modular reactors as a potential route to add 600 MW of carbon-free baseload by 2035 and has discussed preparation for additional nuclear development. That creates potential in engineering, research, regulation, skilled trades and specialized supply chains.

SMR projects remain development-stage opportunities, not guaranteed capacity. Technology selection, licensing, capital cost, financing, construction schedules and electricity demand will determine whether and when projects advance. Clear treatment of that uncertainty makes the opportunity more credible.

Communities could play a larger role

Legislation introduced in May 2026 was intended to let local governments create for-profit corporations for clean-energy generation and delegate related authority to regional service commissions. If enacted and implemented, the model could allow communities to participate more directly in renewable projects and reinvest revenue in infrastructure and services.

Community participation can improve local alignment, but strong governance, transparent financial analysis and meaningful Indigenous engagement remain critical. The most successful projects will need both local legitimacy and sound energy economics.

EV charging adds a visible layer of clean infrastructure

In August 2026, New Brunswick announced nearly $64 million for 72 projects through the 2026-27 Climate Change Fund. More than $6 million was directed to three electric-vehicle charging initiatives, including 16 new fast chargers with 29 total ports and expansion at high-use locations.

Charging infrastructure is smaller than a power station, but it is an important market signal. Better coverage can reduce range concerns, support tourism and fleet adoption, and connect transportation electrification to broader grid planning.
