Real ocean conditions create a development advantage
Marine technology must work in salt water, currents, waves, cold temperatures, biofouling and limited-connectivity environments. Atlantic Canada’s coast provides demanding conditions close to research institutions, ports and operators. That can make product testing more realistic and reveal failures earlier.
Facilities such as the Centre for Ocean Ventures and Entrepreneurship in Halifax support on-water demonstrations and access to industry. The Bedford Institute of Oceanography, FORCE in the Bay of Fundy and research capacity across all four Atlantic provinces add scientific, energy and applied-testing depth.
The Ocean Supercluster connects projects to commercialization
Canada’s Ocean Supercluster is a national, industry-led organization based in Atlantic Canada. Its 2026 website reports more than 1,000 members, 160 approved projects, $1.7 billion in total economic benefits and more than 10,000 direct and indirect jobs. These are national portfolio figures, but Atlantic institutions and companies play a central convening role.
The project portfolio shows the breadth of current development: AI-powered monitoring, marine cybersecurity, dual-use sensing, digital vessel sustainment, aquaculture technology, robotic platforms, electric vessels, port optimization and ocean-climate solutions. Collaborative projects help companies share technical risk and connect with end users.
Artificial intelligence is moving offshore
Ocean AI can combine sensor data, imagery, acoustics, weather, vessel information and environmental records. Applications include fish monitoring, predictive maintenance, route planning, port scheduling, anomaly detection and maritime-domain awareness.
The challenge is that ocean data can be noisy, expensive and difficult to label. Useful systems need robust sensors, reliable communications, domain expertise and validation in real operations. The region’s mix of researchers and operators creates a strong environment for that work.
Autonomy and dual-use systems link civilian and security markets

H2O 2026 connected “home to overseas”
The June 2026 H2O conference in Halifax combined panels, exhibitions, business-to-business meetings and live demonstrations at COVE. Its themes included maritime-domain awareness, surveillance, air and space monitoring, dual-use technology, blue-tech ventures, environmental DNA and workforce readiness.
This format matters because international ocean customers often want to see technology operate, not only review a presentation. Demonstration events can compress the distance between technical validation, partnership and export development.
New Brunswick’s place in the regional ecosystem
New Brunswick contributes ports, aquaculture, energy systems, cybersecurity, research and companies such as Saint John-based Seafarer AI. ResearchNB’s 2026 portfolio also includes projects related to coastal infrastructure, fish distribution and oceans. The Bay of Fundy creates a direct link between environmental research, energy, shipping and coastal resilience.
The province does not need to reproduce every asset found elsewhere in Atlantic Canada. Its advantage grows through specialization and regional connection—linking New Brunswick problems and capabilities to a larger Atlantic commercialization network.
